Is your blog getting slow when high traffic comes in? Does your server go down when you start to get high traffic? Don’t worry now, as in this article I Haider Ali Khan will guide you on how your WordPress blog could handle high traffic.
First of all, find a web hosting company that uses “LiteSpeed Web Server” on there servers. I use (https://i.want.host) for all my high traffic websites.
LiteSpeed Web Server (LSWS) is a high-performance Apache drop-in replacement. LSWS is the 4th most popular web server on the internet and the #1 commercial web server. It reduces the server load and helps your server and websites to be super fast. To know more about LiteSpeed Web Server (LSWS), click here.
Now all you need is to install WP Super Cache plugin and activate it. Once installed, go to Settings > WP Super Cache > Easy. Click “Caching On (Recommended)” and “Update Status”. Then go to Settings > WP Super Cache > Advanced. You will need to change “Use PHP to serve cache files” to “Use mod_rewrite to serve cache files. (Recommended)“. Make sure “Compress pages so they’re served more quickly to visitors. (Recommended)” is ticked too. Click “Update Status” button and you might get an option saying to update the .htaccess file. Hit update you should get a message in a green box saying it has been updated successfully. Now on the same page, go down and you will see an option “Cache Timeout” . Change it to 3600 and click “Change Expiration”. Thats all, your site should be flying now.
If your site is still slow, you can read below on how you could increase your website speed & hold more traffic!
No need to worry if your site or server is still slow after following the above steps. In the following steps, I will guide you on how you can setup CDN on your WordPress blog.
A content delivery network or content distribution network (CDN) is a large distributed system of servers deployed in multiple data centers across the Internet. The goal of a CDN is to serve content to end-users with high availability and high performance. To read more about CDN, click here.
First, you will need to buy a CDN plan from MaxCDN. Create a zone for your WordPress blog in your MaxCDN account and go to the zones Settings that you created. You will see a CNAME like (haiderk.none1405869639.netdna-cdn.com), copy it and go to your WordPress blog admin are > Settings > WP Super Cache > CDN. Tick “Enable CDN Support” and paste the CNAME that you just copied into Off-site URL box. Then click “Save Changes”. Now click the “Easy” tab on the same page and click “Delete Cache” and click “Delete Cache” again. All done 😀 , I hope your site is fast as a bullet after following the above steps.
Note: Your WordPress theme matters also when it comes for the site being fast. If your site is getting 1,000 to 2,000 users online at once and the server or site is slow, you would need to change your theme of your blog to a lighter one. Example: ( https://mythemeshop.com/themes/sociallyviral/ ) Some theme uses to much server CPU and RAM due to the plugins that are integrated.
